Chapter 18

Nick exited the study and made his way through the house. Nick's parents sat at the dinner table, both of them looking a bit uncomfortable. His mother was fidgeting with her napkin, and his father was scrolling through his phone in front of him. Nick's cousin Evan and his fiancée, Catherine, were also sitting at the table, not saying much but exchanging glances every once in a while.

The silence seemed to hang heavy in the air until they saw Nick walk in. When he finally did, they all looked towards him expectantly. His mother cleared her throat nervously before smiling at him.

“Nick! You’re just in time! We heard about your victory during the Inter-High Dungeon Competition, and we went out and got your favorite foods: spinach souffle, wagyu steak, and lobster macaroni and cheese. The servants spent all day preparing them for you! We are so proud of you!” his mom exclaimed despite the fact Nick wasn’t even that far away.

She’s the best, Nick thought as he gave her a warm smile, only to have the smile fade away the moment Catherine opened her mouth.

“That’s right, babe! I’m so proud of you too!” she said before putting both of her hands on Evan’s shoulders. “And when he heard about his favorite cousin doing so great, he also came over, bringing your favorite liquor.”

“You know he’s too young to drink.” Nick’s father didn’t even look up from whatever he was scrolling through on his phone as he admonished Evan from his chair. “Anyway, take your seat next to Catherine, Nick.”

“Of course, Mr. Gallows,” Catherine said with the perfect siren’s voice and smile as she gestured at Nick with their mutually understood “I spiked the drink” symbol.

“You’re always so considerate,” Nick mumbled. He felt like bile was building in his stomach as he forced himself to continue the farce. He sat down in his chair, annoyed that Catherine’s presence meant he would have to go without food or drink yet again, but this time there was no potential for someone like Ms. Wilson to save his unanswered appetite with a pizza.

“So, I heard your team defeated a boss monster?” Evan asked more than said as he looked over at Nick and took a swig of his perfectly fine and unpoisoned drink.

“It was a team effort. I was just there for the ride,” Nick replied, downplaying his achievement. Until he was ready to deal with Evan, he wanted to keep as much of his weak appearance as possible.

“I’m sure you were.” Evan continued eyeing Nick.

“You know me and my condition.” Nick shrugged while walking around the long rectangular table to an empty space between the two traitors where Nick was expected to sit.

“Of course, of course.” Evan smiled for a moment only to wince and then hold his head a second later before shaking it off.

“Is everything okay?” Nick asked as he saw Evan’s reaction.

“Yeah, it’s fine,” Evan mumbled.

“He says that, but he’s lying. For the past few days, he’s had bad headaches, and he’s been a lot more lethargic,” Catherine explained.
