Chapter 18
Nick exited the study and made his way through the house. Nick's parents sat at the dinner table, both of them looking a bit uncomfortable. His mother was fidgeting with her napkin, and his father was scrolling through his phone in front of him. Nick's cousin Evan and his fiancée, Catherine, were also sitting at the table, not saying much but exchanging glances every once in a while.
The silence seemed to hang heavy in the air until they saw Nick walk in. When he finally did, they all looked towards him expectantly. His mother cleared her throat nervously before smiling at him.
âNick! Youâre just in time! We heard about your victory during the Inter-High Dungeon Competition, and we went out and got your favorite foods: spinach souffle, wagyu steak, and lobster macaroni and cheese. The servants spent all day preparing them for you! We are so proud of you!â his mom exclaimed despite the fact Nick wasnât even that far away.
Sheâs the best, Nick thought as he gave her a warm smile, only to have the smile fade away the moment Catherine opened her mouth.
âThatâs right, babe! Iâm so proud of you too!â she said before putting both of her hands on Evanâs shoulders. âAnd when he heard about his favorite cousin doing so great, he also came over, bringing your favorite liquor.â
âYou know heâs too young to drink.â Nickâs father didnât even look up from whatever he was scrolling through on his phone as he admonished Evan from his chair. âAnyway, take your seat next to Catherine, Nick.â
âOf course, Mr. Gallows,â Catherine said with the perfect sirenâs voice and smile as she gestured at Nick with their mutually understood âI spiked the drinkâ symbol.
âYouâre always so considerate,â Nick mumbled. He felt like bile was building in his stomach as he forced himself to continue the farce. He sat down in his chair, annoyed that Catherineâs presence meant he would have to go without food or drink yet again, but this time there was no potential for someone like Ms. Wilson to save his unanswered appetite with a pizza.
âSo, I heard your team defeated a boss monster?â Evan asked more than said as he looked over at Nick and took a swig of his perfectly fine and unpoisoned drink.
âIt was a team effort. I was just there for the ride,â Nick replied, downplaying his achievement. Until he was ready to deal with Evan, he wanted to keep as much of his weak appearance as possible.
âIâm sure you were.â Evan continued eyeing Nick.
âYou know me and my condition.â Nick shrugged while walking around the long rectangular table to an empty space between the two traitors where Nick was expected to sit.
âOf course, of course.â Evan smiled for a moment only to wince and then hold his head a second later before shaking it off.
âIs everything okay?â Nick asked as he saw Evanâs reaction.
âYeah, itâs fine,â Evan mumbled.
âHe says that, but heâs lying. For the past few days, heâs had bad headaches, and heâs been a lot more lethargic,â Catherine explained.
